Dinner package at Indigo Restaurant & Bar
Indigo Restaurant & Bar is both a lunch restaurant, a fine dining establishment, a bar, and a bistro. It's like a second living room in the city. Here, they blend Scandinavian and Southern European cuisine – classic flavors and well-known dishes, presented in new contexts.
On Friday and Saturday evenings, Indigo is also an important part of Mariehamn's entertainment scene with its popular bar. During the summer, a large, lovely outdoor terrace is opened, where it's easy to linger for a long time since it's open from early lunch until late in the evening.
The restaurant was opened by restaurateurs Stig Grönlund and Björn Ekstrand in the spring of 2004. Björn continued on to new goals in the fall of 2012, and Stig's new colleague since then is the well-known Åland profile Dennis Jansson. He also runs Kino Nightclub and the pizzeria Diablo, which is next door to Indigo.
The restaurant is housed in what is perhaps the best-preserved stone house in Mariehamn. The oldest parts were actually built as early as the late 1800s, when the city resembled more of a village. In the 1870s, shipowner and merchant Victor Starck built two warehouses for his shipping and wholesale business – one in brick and one in granite. The warehouses stored cement, nails, and all kinds of building materials. At times, the warehouse also served as a spirits cellar. To make the warehouse secure from break-ins, iron bars were placed on the windows. For a period, the warehouse was also used as a prison. The courtyard, with a residential house, warehouse, and bakehouse (which today houses the café Bagarstugan), was taken over in the early 1900s by shipowner and consul Erik Nylund and his wife Elin.
Where the stairs now lead up to Indigo's bar, there was once a slide for cement bags and other goods that were thrown down to the lower floor. On Nygatan, several horse-drawn carriages from the countryside were waiting for loading. The building was used as a warehouse until the 1970s, when it became a pottery factory. In April 2004, Indigo Restaurant was inaugurated. The history of the warehouse can still be seen on the beautiful stone walls and the cozy atmosphere with wooden beams in the attic where the bar is located.
